Sept 15-Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. We started this project with a book. Friday Kahlo by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Gee Fan Eng. The book spoke about her life and the struggles that she endured. Through the book we learn that Art is what helped Frida through these struggles. We also learned that she loved to do Self-portraits but also that she loved to paint still lives. Each table had a mini still life of various fruits and veggies.Students began by utilizing black crayons to draw the outline of their vegetables. They were to draw the contour lines of each object. They could choose to draw some from memory as we did not have an pineapple or other such fruits on hand to look at. This project did work on their ability to do observational drawing. Next students used a white crayon to create design and pattern in the background of their paintings. The following class students utilized watercolor paints to create a well blended base for the rest of the painting. We then used all colors to add value to our vegetables. Students were given the opportunity to use realistic colors or their imagination to make their paintings unique with color.
