Sept 15-Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. We started this project with a book. Friday Kahlo by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Gee Fan Eng. The book spoke about her life and the struggles that she endured. Through the book we learn that Art is what helped Frida through these struggles. We also learned that she loved to do Self-portraits but also that she loved to paint still lives. Each table had a mini still life of various fruits and veggies.Students began by utilizing black crayons to draw the outline of their vegetables. They were to draw the contour lines of each object. They could choose to draw some from memory as we did not have an pineapple or other such fruits on hand to look at. This project did work on their ability to do observational drawing. Next students used a white crayon to create design and pattern in the background of their paintings. The following class students utilized watercolor paints to create a well blended base for the rest of the painting. We then used all colors to add value to our vegetables. Students were given the opportunity to use realistic colors or their imagination to make their paintings unique with color. Sept 15-Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. Each table had a mini still life of various fruits and veggies. We then took oil pastels and created our drawings. We spoke about using color to make them more realistic, but also how it is fun to use our imagination to add color to our still life. Students were to use a lot of pressure when drawing in order to create good solid color. We then took a white oil pastel and created patterns and designs on the background. The following class we utilized watercolor to fill in the background. We discussed a little science when we talked about how oil (oil pastel) and water (watercolor paint) will not mix because they do not like each other. That is how the magic is created when they paint over the white patterns on their background and their designs magically appear. Sept 15-Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. Students then started with watercolor paints and covered the paper with blended colors in cool colors (Blue, Violet, and Green). They then switched to Tempera Paint where we worked on lines and blending using warm colors (Red, Orange and Yellow). They then repeated this process leaving them with three different painted papers. We also did a larger paper 12x18 as our backdrop. They were to create an outdoor landscape or an interior room. We then took oil pastels and added our details to the background creating our spaces. Next we flipped over all of the papers and drew our bowls and a variety of fruits and veggies that were then cut out and pasted onto our backdrop. This project worked on the history of the artist Frida Kahlo, as well as cutting skills, lines, color blending, composition and placement of their objects.
For International Day of Peace K-2 created peace mobiles that are hung in the Elementary Lobby, The Art Room and the Windy Tree Caff. These were created by the students painting a branch, a piece of an egg carton, coloring a circle and then stringing it all together with beads and yarn. 3-6 created Peace Rocks. These were put into boxes and delivered to the Superintendents office, Public Library, and the Windy Tree Caff. The community could each take one rock to remind them of peace. Grades K-6 started the year by creating painted paper that will be utilized later in the year. It was fun to dig right into paper and paint. We used a variety of tools to create marks. To learn the variety of techniques that we will be using to create art later in the year. We also experimented with mixing color. K-2 grade created self-portraits in pencil using mirrors. We will do another self-portrait at the end of the year.
